Beyond Text: Using Images, Voice and Files with AI Assistants

Oct 6, 2026 1 min read

AI assistants are no longer text-only. You can show them a photo, talk to them out loud or upload a spreadsheet, and that opens up many everyday uses.

Images and photos

  • Photograph a broken appliance and ask what might be wrong.
  • Upload a chart and ask what it shows.
  • Snap a menu or sign in another language for a translation.
  • Share a screenshot of an error message.
  • Get feedback on a design or slide.

Voice

Voice mode is great for practicing languages, rehearsing presentations, brainstorming while walking or getting hands-free help while cooking.

Files

  • PDFs: summaries and Q&A
  • Spreadsheets: analysis, charts and formulas
  • Code files: reviews and explanations
  • Slides: feedback and speaker notes

Prompt tips

Tell the assistant what you want from the file or image: "Look at this photo of my living room and suggest 3 layout changes to make it feel bigger" is better than "What do you think?"

Privacy

Photos and documents may contain personal data, faces, addresses or confidential details. Crop or redact before uploading.
