Structure Your Prompts with Headings, Lists and Delimiters

Oct 7, 2026 1 min read

As prompts grow, they become harder for both you and the AI to read. A little structure makes complex requests far more reliable.

Separate instructions from content

Put the text you want processed between clear markers, so the model doesn't confuse it with your instructions:

Summarise the article between the triple quotes in 5 bullet points.

"""
[paste article]
"""

Some people use XML-style tags like <article>...</article>, which work well with many models.

Use labelled sections

ROLE: You are an experienced HR manager.
TASK: Write a job description for a junior designer.
CONTEXT: 20-person startup, remote-first, values curiosity.
FORMAT: Headings, bullet points, under 400 words.
AVOID: Jargon like "rockstar" or "ninja".

Number your requirements

Numbered lists make it easy to check whether every requirement was met, and easy to refer back to: "Requirement 3 is missing."

Specify the output format

Tables, JSON, bullet points or a specific template: say exactly what you want, ideally with an example.

Keep it readable

If you can't quickly understand your own prompt, the AI may struggle too. Structure is clarity.
